Parler d’µ-ziq, c’est traiter d’un des grands du monde le la musique électronique. Voir même une légende, au coté de Squarepusher, Autechre et Aphex Twin. Plus ou moins repéré par ce dernier dans le début des années 1990, Mike Paradinas n’a cessé de sortir des diamants, surclassant la majorité de ce qui pouvait ce faire à chaque fois. En point d’orgue, son dernier album en date, Bilious Path, réussissant à télescoper tout ce qui pouvait se faire de mieux dans la musique électronique. Avec des disques aux orientations toujours différentes, l’artiste fait parti des rares génies sachant quelle musique sortir au bon moment, pour marquer à chaque fois le paysage musical avec l’un de ses jalons. Mais plus que cela, Mike Paradinas est aussi le boss d’un label Majeur, Planet Mu, véritable vivier de talents pour musiques déviantes, sortant à la fin du mois un disque célébrant sa 200eme sortie… Apres un long silence, 4 ans exactement, µ-ziq, revient, presque trop discrètement, avec un album qui va encore faire date.
Impossible de passer outre la pochette de ce Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique, de grande classe, superbe, glauque et mystérieuse, réalisée de main de maître par le « As1projects » (créateurs des dernières pochettes de Venetian Snares ou Otto Von Schirach notamment). Mais c’est surtout l’intérieur qui va frapper, d’une violence insoutenable comparé à l’artwork frontal, comme pour prendre par surprise, nous qui étions bassement intrigués par la pochette, pour combler notre voyeurisme latent jusqu’à overdose. La version vinyle de ce µ-ziq offre, directement elle, une véritable vision d’horreur à porté de tous dans les rayons d’une banale Fnac. Ce disque, entre ses images et sa musique, va être une véritable plongée au sein d’un esprit malade, toutes interprétations comprises.
L’album commence bien. Très bien même. Prongh Seemness est superbe. Et annonce sans détour la couleur de cet album. Terminé les sauvageries Breakcore du dernier Opus, on retourne ici à quelque chose de plus diffus, de plus beau et IDM dans l’âme, comme pouvaient être ses « Lunatic Harness » ou « Bluff Limbo »… ici, la mélodie, égrenée par un synthé presque timide, est sublime. Les beats résonnent, rebondissent calmement, sans agresser une seule seconde l’auditeur apeuré par la plastique du disque. C’est effectivement l’age d’or de la musique électronique qui est remise ici au goût du jour. Les meilleurs µ-ziq, les premiers Aphex Twin, le « Tri Repetae » d’Autechre…
Et Duntisbourne Abbots ne me fera pas mentir, dans la même veine que son camarade d’ouverture. Mais au long de ces 17 plages, il serait presque impossible de ne pas se répéter pour parler de cet album. Car c’est l’un des disques les plus homogènesqui soit. TOUTES les pistes vont marcher sur ce schéma : Synthés à pleurer et rythmiques qui se déroulent avec plus ou moins d’insistance. Rien de plus.
Oh il y a bien quelques pistes un peu plus ravagées comme Woozy, Old & Tired ou 2CV, qui laisseront place à une bonne grosse lignes de beats bien crados. Ces derniers se feront même absent le temps de ballades mélodiques comme pour Eggshell 1 & 2 ou Strawberry Fields Hotel.
Pourtant l’intérêt de ce disque est tout autre : Important. Marquant. Choquant. Car tout au long de ces superbes 70 minutes, on est plongé dans quelque chose de malsain, de dérangeant. Comme si Mike Paradinas avait fait la totalité de ce disque en ayant envie de vomir. Ou de découper quelqu’un en morceau. Pas une seule seconde, la musique transpire la normalité. Ce disque pue le cadavre, l’instabilité mentale, le dégoût de soi voir des autres. C’est indescriptible. Même la sublime Rise Of The Salmon, ode aux claviers cristallins, est trop candide, trop belle pour être prise au premier degré. Celle qui devait être une vraie bouffé d’oxygène au milieu de la galette révèle encore plus l’anormalité de ce dernier.
Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique, c’est un disque qui a le cancer. Malgré toute sa beauté apparente, malgré son aura et ses mélodies sublimes, quelque chose le ronge. Quelque chose qui vous met mal à l’aise, qui vous retourne, qui vous gène, qui pourrait vous porter à la gorge à haute dose.
Comme une jolie petite fille qui aurait des moignons. L’envie irrépressible de se focaliser sur son visage d’ange serait irrémédiablement parasitée par le malaise inconscient de serrer un petit être aux mains coupées.
Quand au dernier titre, Drum Light, c’est tout simplement l’un des moments les plus physique et intense qu’il m’a été donné de vivre dans la musique depuis des années. C’est indescriptible, incroyable, gigantesque. Une sensation énorme, sans équivalent dans ma mémoire. Mais plus qu’un morceau, il est l’aboutissement des 16 titres du disque. Sans le reste de l’album, Drum Light n’est rien. Mais sans ce dernier morceau, l’album reste sans signification. Il est comme le Twist final du meilleur des films policiers, la révélation de dernière minute, comme celle d’un Old Boy, d’un Sixième Sens ou d’un Saw mis en musique.
Pour entériner le fait qu’après une longue préparation au malaise, la conclusion vous faisait justement tendre à l’évanouissement. Les 16 premiers titres du disque étant une ballade avec cette envie latente de suicide, qui conduit vos pieds vers le précipice salvateur, alors que le dernier morceau en matérialise la chute, longue, absolue, somptueuse et brutale.
Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique aurait pu être aisément le disque électronique de l’année, s’il n’avait pas été autant personnel, jusqu’au-boutiste dans sa direction, dans ses choix, dans son ensemble. Ce disque est unique. Pas dans sa qualité, mais dans son positionnement, par rapport à lui-même, par rapport au catalogue de son label, par rapport même à la musique électronique d’aujourd’hui. C’est aussi / surtout l’oeuvre d’un grand malade, ou d’un génie qui se fait passer pour, et qui ne plaira jamais aux personnes n’ayant pas un minimum de problèmes mentaux.
Ce disque est trop important pour être ignoré, mais sûrement trop singulier pour être apprécié.
Et c’est bien de cela qu’il tire son incroyable aura.
