Cela faisait un bail que je n’avais pas parlé de Venetian Snares. D’une part parcequ’après quelques années folle, le bonhomme avait tranquillement ralenti la cadence, arrêtant de sortir 3 albums par ans. Mais surtout parce que la qualité avait décliné. S’il est impossible de nier la grandeur de certains opus du musicien, qu’ils soient hardcore (Songs About My Cat, Winter In A Belly, Meathole), débiles (Cavalcade of glee…, A Giant Alien Force…) ou dingues en terme de compositions (Rossz Csillag), Venetian Snares avait clairement commencé à nous pomper l’air depuis son LP Filth. S’ensuivit une brochette de disques oscillant entre l’inintéressant et la blague sympa, ce qui, forcément, pouvait frustrer nos petits cœurs pourtant meurtris à vie par certaines productions du viking canadien.
Ce n’est pas la seule raison qui m’a poussé à m’écarter de V.Snares. Mon désamour de ses dernières productions pouvait s’expliquer également par le déclin de mes capacités auditives. On pourrait résumer mon état d’esprit à chaque nouvel LP par un “je n’ai pas le courage”. Pas le courage de me prendre une tempête breakcore dans mes tympans déjà bien blessés. Pas le courage de devoir assimiler un bordel pareil, pas forcément qualitatif qui plus est, alors qu’il me suffisait de balancer un Rossz Csillag pour prendre mon pied et chialer un coup. C’est ça vieillir. Refuser la dangereuse aventure pour se lover contre les rassurants fantômes du passé. Et puis les oreilles rayées empêchant d’écouter un disque sauvage trop fort au casque, alors que c’est pour moi le mode optimal pour écouter V.Snares, c’est embêtant. On ne demande pas à une jambe fracturée de courir un marathon, non ?
Mais il y avait un je-ne-sais-quoi de mystère autour de ce My Love Is a Bulldozer, entre la pochette renouant avec le non-sens d’auparavant, le fait que les cordes classiques refaisaient leur retour et que le chevelu allait se mettre à chantonner (même si ce dernier point semblait me rebuter plus qu’autre chose).
Il n’y a pourtant pas de révolution dans ce nouveau disque. Il nous rappelle que Aaron Funk est toujours au dessus de la mêlée (et je ne parle pas que du Breakcore) pour ce qui de la composition stricte, arrivant à malaxer le meilleur du jazz, du classique, de la pop et d’electronique pour accoucher d’une mixture traumatisante. Les meilleurs moments ne sont pas les plus sauvages, et si un titre comme 1000 years impressionne, c’est autant par sa chevauchée hystérique que par son intro sublime, presque trop rapidement balayée. C’est aussi dans ce morceau, ainsi que sur le suivant, Your Smiling Face, que l’on comprend l’importance de la composante “voix” dans ce LP.
Clairement, ça pourra diviser, et je ne suis toujours pas sur de mon opinion sur ce sujet. Voix grandiloquente, sur jouée, à faire grincer bien des dents, parfaitement maitrisée et clairement maladroite dans le même mouvement. Ça gâchera notre plaisir un matin, avant de nous voler le cœur le soir. Seule certitude, Aaron Funk met mal à l’aise avec son organe. On n’entend pas ici un compositeur se mettant subitement au chant à la Apparat. On entend Ça, car Il est revenu. On perçoit un putain de clown fou qui nous débite des horreurs avec délice, le sourire jusqu’au oreille. Il te susurre des mots d’amour, mais tu as plus l’impression d’avoir un gars qui te propose de te dévorer les entrailles au plus vite. Alors toi tu avances prudemment, entre les violons qui pleurent et les salves électroniques violente, avec un gars peinturluré qui te course en te faisant flipper avec sa grosse voix, partant parfois dans des teintes réellement déraisonnables (Your Smiling Face, notamment).
Malgré Ça, il y a de sacrés bijoux dans le disque, outre les suscités. Des morceaux comme Dear Poet ou 10th Circle Of Winnipeg sont dans le pur Venetian, avec mélodies à tomber et cavalcades émo. On est pas dans l’ultra violence, mais dans le sacrément secoué quand même, et la richesse de chaque morceau enterre mille fois la concurrence (cela faisait bien bien longtemps que l’on avait pas entendu une track de la trempe de 10th Circle chez Aaron Funk).
Il y a de plus quelques morceaux beatless, rappelant que si My Downfall était un LP convenant parfaitement aux oreilles blessés, il n’en restait pas moins un putain de bel album. On viendrait presque à regretter qu’il n’y ait pas plus de pièces instrumentales, ou que Venetian ne ressortent pas un deuxième opus de la même trempe. Deleted Poems ou Your Blanket ne pourront que me donner raison.
Loin d’être un album parfait, loin d’être la sortie de l’année, Venetian Snares réussît néanmoins le tour de force de me donner envie de replonger dans ses crises d’épilepsies. C’est propre, c’est beau, c’est flingué. C’est un peu maladroit, un peu grandiloquent peut-être. Mais c’est rondement mené.
Ça pourrait presque me faire retomber dans de veilles addictions. Car comme dans tout sevrage, il y a toujours phénomène de rebond.
