Signé chez Hyperdub après avoir trainé ses guêtres sur Planet Mu en Europe (même si le mec est l’un des papes du mouvement aux USA), Rashad semble avoir eu la prescription nécessaire de Rivotril pour enfin soigner ses crises d’épilepsie. Ou peut-être via l’influence du label de Kode9, lui demandant de calmer le jeu. Ou Rashad lui même, fatigué de se faire coffrer par les flics après chaque soirée vu que la moitié du public partait en convulsion. Et grace à ces envies d’accalmies que Double Cup frappe un grand coup. Réalisé en grande partie avec son pote Dj Spinn, Rashad balance une galette fortement teinté hiphop, avec des samples chauds et soul, qui pourrait traumatiser bien des Mc en manque d’instrue à dompter. En ce sens, Feelin ouvre superbement le disque, instrue hiphop faite pour être écouté au volant de sa bagnole, les fenêtres baissées, la clope au bec, en roulant au ralenti. Beat pachydermie, légers craquages donnant un caractère imprévisible au morceau, qui va d’ailleurs lentement évoluer de l’uppercut ghetto à la folie jungle. Tu n’as pas envie de danser comme un chaman voodoo sur ce truc, juste de bouger la nuque en te plongeant dans la drogue.
Et avec étonnement, on se rend compte qu’une bonne majorité de ce Double Cup LP se concentre sur un hiphop massif et ghetto plutôt que sur l’hystérie pure du Footwork. C’est l’une des rares fois que j’écoute un disque du mouvement en ayant plus envie de marcher dans la rue en levant mes mains en l’air plutôt qu’en me roulant par terre en bavant. Ce sont ces morceaux hiphop qui dynamitent l’album, et le porte haut dans le ciel, teinté de drogue et de voix screwées : Pass That Shit est une folie pimp, Double Cup ou Drank Kush Barz devraient arriver aux oreilles d’Asap Rocky ou Schoolboy Q sous peu, et le sublime She a Go, un des meilleurs morceaux du disque, quasiment rappé, représente parfaitement ce coté ghetto–soul-hiphop ultra massif, graduellement vicié par une boite à rythme effrénée.
Mais Hyperdub semble être passé par là, et Rashad s’essaie presque à un genre bien apprécié par le label : le Uk Garage. Là aussi, ce dernier est réduit en bouilli par le cerveau malade du dj de Chicago, mais des morceaux comme Only One, avec mélodie planantes et voix puputes, et surtout Let U Know, qui aurait pu se glisser dans le dernier mix de Dj EZ, avec son rythme claudiquant, ses voix émo et sa ligne acid sur la fin. Rashad lorgne sur un espèce de UK deep mutant façon Chicago (ça tombe bien, ils viennent du même patelin) avec l’excellent Leavin, qui fera pleurer plus d’un dancefloor, déjà rendu fou par la rythmique chaotique.
Il y aura même quelques extra-terrestres inclassables, façon Reggie qui désintégrera toute synapse passant sur son chemin, ou le violent Acid Bit, qui s’est littéralement échappé d’un album de Ceephax, et qui est demandé à l’accueil car papa s’inquiète.
Je n’attendais rien de ce disque, à part pour les jours où j’ai envie de tout casser en bavant, et je tombe sur un parfait album hiphop assez saccadé pour me donner envie de faire la bringue, et dans le même temps assez laidback pour me poser sur un canapé en dodelinant de la tête. Pas de mauvais gout, pas de track inécoutable, que des bombes, malgré quelques rares écarts de conduite dans la cohérence du LP (Acid Bit, que s’est-il passé?). On pourrait presque ériger Double Cup comme une référence, une géniale porte d’entrée tout du moins, une galette parfaite pour appréhender le mouvement sans avoir l’impression se faire tabasser par mutants forcenés. Rashad abandonne l’ecstasy habituelle pour des gros pilons, et ça lui va très bien.
