Té fait parti des rares groupes japonais à avoir un minimum de résonnance hors de ses frontières. Rien d’impressionnant, mais avec un Lp édité sur un label Us (sur la demi-douzaine de galettes balancées par le groupe) et quelques chroniques ici et là, Té, son Math-post-rock et ses noms d’albums improbables, ont pu faire leur trou dans certains tympans européens. Pour la sortie de leur nouveau disque, sobrement intitulé 敢えて、理解を望み縺れ尽く音声や文字の枠外での『約束』を, (…) le quatuor se paie une affiche avec World’s End Girlfriend, rien que ça. Bref, une belle soirée Post-rock bien sérieuse en perspective, avec un public au cheveux long qui va dodeliner de la tête en se laissant noyer par la mélancolie et la tristesse des attaques sono… hey what ? Le groupe entre en piste, des cris stridents retentissent, une nuée de demoiselles foncent vers le premier rang en s’arrachant les viscères pour être au plus près de la scène. Les minijupes sautillent, des petites pancartes “I love Té” font leur apparitions et tout le monde balance des “kyaaaaaaaaaa” retentissants.
Ok, donc si du coté de chez nous, le groupe est considéré comme une sérieuse formation de Math Rock presque experimentale, à l’instar d’un Battles, il en est tout autre au Japon, car Té est un groupe pour midinettes. La surprise. Alors on flippe, on se dit que l’on s’est trompé de line-up, que l’on va se prendre une heure de soupe mielleuse. Que neni, Té balance ses compos cradingues et violentes, se transforment même en créateurs de fresques géniales, déchirées, agressives, avec des murs de guitares parfois démesurés. Le tout en étirant sur plus de 20 minutes des morceaux d’album qui ne demandaient que ça (Chez té, on fait du post math rock, mais jamais sur plus de 5 minutes, ce qui peut être rapidement frustrant). Le guitariste est complètement fou, saute dans tous les coins en faisant pleins de mimiques cool, tandis que le bassiste fait la tronche et nous montre son cul pendant tout le concert, même quand il s’adresse au public. Attaques soniques, saturations ultra violentes, ça gronde, morceaux de folie, les tympans saignent, c’est le chaos sur la dernière demi-heure finale. Mais pas de problème, le public continue de crier son amour pour le groupe dans la joie et la bonne humeur, et chavire de bonheur à chaque clin d’œil des membres du groupe parce qu’ils sont trop beaux. (Et chante carrement parfois… genre, chanter du Té ?!?) Bref, le contraste est génial : Tu as l’impression d’assister à un concert des BB brunes, mais en fait tu écoutes de l’experimental-noise-rock bien brutal. La magie du Japon.
Sinon le nouveau Lp est dans la stricte lignée des précédents, pas de surprise réelle, Té fait du Té, ça tricote dur, et c’est toujours aussi bien foutu, excellent dans cet équilibre Math Rock / mélodie plus pop . Mais pour le coup, depuis avoir vu les mecs de visu, j’espère surtout que le groupe se fendra un de ses jours d’un disque live, tant Té, en concert, donne une aura incroyable à des morceaux qui n’en espéraient pas moins. / Dat’
The té guys have nice live gimmicks; you’ve the drummer, regularly standing up to assault a cymbal with extra viciousness (and then sitting right down again), the guy who would be the lead singer (if there was any singing), who plays bass facing completely away from the audience (affected, but kind of charming), and the other guitarist, who is apparently some kind of precision rockstar-pose striking robot. There’s also an other guitarist, but maybe by that point they’d run out of ideas.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of the gig was the sheer number of teenage shibuya-kei girls squealing in the front row; a rare site at a post-rock event in Japan. You can hardly even begrudge te’ the five-minute-plus banter sessions with their fans (conducted by the back of the not-lead-singer’s head). The actual music’s rather good too – instrumental post-rock, shades of Mono, but much livelier, with faster drumming – and during the live their radio-friendly 3 minute CD tracks get expanded out to the 10+ minute post-rock pieces they were meant to be. Certainly enjoyable enough that you even forget you’re waiting for World’s End Girlfriend – whose arrival, incidentally, is marked by the shibuya-kei girls being replaced by an akiba-kei backpack brigade.
