J’ai été très longtemps un vrai boulimique de dub, dans toutes ses formes. Rares sont les styles musicaux qui peuvent autant vous foutre dans les étoiles en quelques minutes, sans l’aide d’un rail pachydermique. Les habitants de l’hexagone peuvent remercier dame musique, la France est une des scènes les plus prolifiques dans le genre, avec en fer de lance des groupes incontournables comme High Tone, Ez3kiel, Zenzile, Improvisators Dub ou Kaly. Cette scène Dub, on ne peut que la suivre après être tombé dedans. A dire vrai, c’est le “Opus Incertum” d’High Tone qui a été la première claque d’un genre que je toisais auparavant d’une oreille désintéressée… chemin jalonné d’autres énormes baffes, comme l'”ADN” de ces même High Tone, le “Barb4ry” d’Ez3kiel, Framix et son disque éponyme ou le “Never Trust an Hippy” d’Adrian Sherwood… (Et j’en oublie des tonnes, mais le listing pourrait prévaloir d’article à part entière)
L’intérêt premier du Dub, c’est sa faculté de se mouvoir dans tout les genres possibles, se couplant à merveille avec Electro, HipHop, Rock, Noise, Indus…
Le problème du Dub, c’est que la scène fut tellement foisonnante entre 2000 et 2006 dans notre chère France, et surtout Lyon, véritable vivier de talents, que le genre, sans se scléroser, s’est presque banalisé, devenu plus timoré, voir ronflant, pour ne plus fournir, à terme, autant de bijoux que pendant son avènement… Les splits et collaborations se généralisent, comme si l’inspiration ne pouvait plus se trouver seul, et les disques semblent bien moins aventureux qu’auparavant. Certains se perdent, d’autres s’aplatissent, et l’on est guère excité que part les futurs projets d’Ez3kiel, l’association Truffaz / Kaly, un hypothétique prochain High Tone ou des projets transgenres explosant le schéma Dub comme le dernier Picore…
Picore, parlons en… Car Uzul Prod est un projet réunissant deux personnes:
D’un coté, le guitariste du groupe Picore, responsable du brûlot “L’hélium du peuple” (il va falloir que je pense à faire un article sur celui là).
De l’autre le Machiniste de Kaly Live Dub, groupe inévitable dans le dub français.
Au vu des précédents collabs entre deux groupes, agréables mais pas transcendantes, je n’attendais pas grand chose de ce “Travelling without Moving”, sorti sans grandes annonces, presque trop discrètement. Un disque de dub de plus, en attendant des projets plus important. Mais pourtant, comme dirait l’autre, la carapace ne fait pas la tortue…
Il a été rarement plus facile de cerner le concept d’un album qu’avec cet Uzul Prod. Entre son titre, “Travelling Without Moving”, et ses pistes aux senteurs de vieux routards, intitulées Saigon, Bucarest, Moscou ou encore Bagdad. La galette n’a pour objectif premier que de nous prendre par la main pour nous tenter de faire le tour du monde.
En attendant, la première escale, Mostar ne pouvait pas être meilleure destination pour commencer le voyage. Instruments et voix mystérieuses se superposent à foison pour nous embarquer directement à 10.000 km de notre lieu d’écoute. Discrètement surplombé d’un beat menaçant, et sublimé par un son crade dans sa dernière ligne droite, cette piste est d’une incroyable beauté, oscillant constamment entre tension et plénitude absolu. La densité du son impressionne, enveloppant carrément notre cerveau pour annihiler tout sentiments pouvant parasiter l’envie d’évasion, plus que titillée par les mains Uzul Prod. Parfait comme salle d’embarquement, Mostar ne donne qu’une envie, se caller bien profond dans son canapé et fermer les yeux pour continuer de s’envoler bien bien haut dans les cieux.
Et grand bien nous fasse, car l’escale suivante, Bucarest ne déçoit pas. Nous ne somme plus dans la quiétude de la ville précédente, car on se sent bien plus bousculé entre ses sons plus agressifs et cette basse dub qui claque, qui résonne dans notre tête. Mais le chant de cette femme, presque possédée, brise les os, vous hypnotise. On entend qu’elle, pourtant pilonnée de toute part par ces machines ronflantes. Le tout se noue, s’enroule, s’envole. Et lorsque l’on frôle l’explosion, Carbon Copies (Spade & Archer) débarque pour poser un hip-hop sombre, avec son flow grave et dur, se liant comme jamais avec les chants et instruments traditionnels dans cette mer d’électricité. Superbe.
Et comment ne pas survoler Benares, qui nous plonge dans un tourbillon indien, où tout semble miraculeusement dosé, des chants aux machines, sans violence aucune, avec en point d’orgue ses cordes pincées (Swarmandal ?). C’est sublime, et plus encore quand tout bascule sur une Drum and bass concassée, à vous tétaniser en pleine rêverie. On quitterait presque avec regret cette étape majeur du disque pour le Vietnam, destination Saigon, pour une expédition tout aussi riche et prenante, mais à l’accueil plus rugueux, avec cet horizon menaçant, flirtant avec l’indus, sans jamais nous submerger, mais nous obligeant à la prudence en parcourant ces terres. Reste que la grâce est toujours là, distillée avec parcimonie, avec un piano perçant timidement aux détours des nombreuses aspérités du morceau.
Mais Uzul Prod est loin de se la jouer tour-operator de luxe, ne proposant que des plages propices à l’évasion. Certaines destinations proposent une immersion dans la crasse et l’abrupte, cultivant avec autant de talent l’inhospitalité que les premières destinations enchanteresses. Le passage au Maroc via le cannabis de Ketama ne va pas vous pousser à la discipline des ronds de fumé, mais vous plonger dans un paysage industriel violent, faisant penser aux paysages les plus escarpés d’High Tone, en distordant les voix au maximum, le tout martelé de beats Massifs…
Pour London, ce n’est pas les jardins du palais royal qui vous seront proposés, mais les rues sombres et crades de Brixton emplit de geezers hargneux : Hip-hop Indus, pércus métalliques et guitare écrasante, vous pousseront à marcher le dos courbé et la capuche vissée sur la tête.
Bagdad reflétera bien la tension de cette capitale morcelé, avec son rythme appuyé et ses sonorités ultra-rugueuses, martelant incantations et instruments hallucinés. Excellente conclusion d’un voyage en neuf étapes, Bagdad vous fait planer au dessus d’un champ dévasté, en vous obligeant à vous luxer la nuque sur cette rythmique martiale et imparable.
Reste une remarque, qui n’est clairement pas un regret : On ne pourra pas faire un Blind-test façon guide du routard avec les morceaux pris un à un, car il pourrait être difficile de distinguer réellement la ville en question à travers ses sonorités. Le nom des villes étant plus un prétexte à l’évasion qu’une véritable mise en musique de l’ambiance d’une capitale (même si certaines pistes comme Benares ou Bagdad pourront facilement être assimilées à leur track respective.)
Mais ce qui surprend bien plus, outre être revenu d’un tour du monde fictif avec plein de souvenirs dans la tête, c’est de tomber sur un disque qui se révèle au final plus qu’excellent, alors que l’on était parti pour une expérience simplement « agréable », voir banale. Uzul Prod arrive à construire des tableaux d’une cohérence et d’une maîtrise bluffante, et pousse bien plus loin dans la qualité que les sempiternels disques « electro-dub » que l’on a pu nous servir ces derniers temps. On se surprend à se laisser aller quasi instantanément dans les nuages, à planer, tout en se permettant de fouler certains paysages sombres et défoncés.
Au final, cette collaboration entre deux têtes de groupes lyonnais (encore) est une franche réussite, surprenante, allant jusqu’à pointer dans les meilleures galettes Dub qui me soit tombées dans les oreilles depuis un bon couple d’année…
Immanquable pour les amateurs « d’ethno-electro-dub », tout comme ceux qui se plaisent à flotter en s’abandonnant totalement dans n’importe quel cocon musical.
Paris a sa tour Eiffel, Lyon a son Dub. Que tous ses acteurs se démènent pour entretenir ce patrimoine ô combien important.
