J’ai vraiment eu du mal à mettre la main sur ce disque, que j’attendais depuis longtemps (toutes proportions gardées), après avoir croisé un titre au hasard de pérégrinations sur le web. Le genre de petit coup de coeur embrassé au beau milieu de la nuit, qui vous parasite pendant des semaines, avant de pouvoir enfin en entendre plus en mettant la main sur la galette.
Manque de pot, ce Clubroot de Clubroot (cela ne s’invente pas) est la toute première sortie d’un anglais qui sort encore de nul part, dont on ne sait rien ou presque, et qui se paie le luxe de sortir son album sur une petite structure indépendante qui n’avait jusque alors sorti que des Ep vyniles. (si l’on excepte un excellent mix de Starkey, quelques semaines avant) Et contrairement à ce que laisse penser le nom du disque, ce n’est pas aux bases du Clubbing que le musicien va s’attaquer, mais bien à de superbes fresques en suspensions, royaume miroir éthéré parachuté sur des rythmes bien appuyés. Un Clubbing peuplé de fantômes et autres créatures vivant en Slow-motion.
Derriere un livret un peu radin en belles photos (impossible de trouver la vraie cover sur le net d’ailleurs, la photo de l’arbre ayant des teintes bleues sur le disque), mais agrémenté de pas mal de remerciements mettant en exergue la difficulté pour un label de balancer sa première grosse sortie, se cache un début d’album un peu raté. Pas mauvais en soi, mais subissant le contre coup des deux tiers suivants, mirifiques. En gros, après deux salves promettant un joli départ, on patine dans une musique sombre, assez répétitive sur les deux morceaux suivants, laissant la part belle aux échos et wobble bass nécrosées. Hypnotique, plaisant, mais pas foncièrement important. A dire, vrai, il serait médisant de dire que le titre d’ouverture, Low Pressure Zonene mérite pas son coup d’oreille, tant le tout est maitrisé parfaitement, entre réverbération de caverne, gros beat qui semble directement sonner dans le crane, et choeurs d’église androide à filer la chair de poule à partir de la moitié du morceau. Les effets sont superbes, la profondeur de son impressionne, et semble nous dire, en gros et en rouge “A écouter avec un casque audio svp“. A l’aube de ce premier morceau, on pense immédiatement à Burial. Celui du premier album, sec et aride, pas les sonorités baise-moites du superbe Untrue.
Et au milieu de ce sympa premier titre, et des deux coups de freins intervenant juste après, se trouve Embryo, empereur désigné de ce Clubroot, par sa durée (7 min 30) et par sa beauté. Classe incroyable, évidente, incontestable. Des synthés cristallins, angéliques, célestes, ouvrent le titre et violent l’âme. Le pilonnage du rythme, lent, claudiquant, agit comme un coup de boutoir dans un estomac déjà empli de papillons. Une ligne de basse vrombit, le rythme s’accélère, semble vouloir s’élancer directement dans le vide, nous emportant dans sa chute, interminable, sublime, parfaite. Anges en pleine rave dans une caverne de glace, suçant des psychotropes pour figer le monde, fatigués d’observer les hommes se bouffer les uns les autres. Electro immaculée semblant s’ébattre dans les zéphyrs. Ces claviers bordels. On n’avait pas eu un son d’une telle pureté depuis un certain Scuba. Et encore, sur ce domaine précis, Clubroot semble le tuer sur place.
Apres ce tunnel de deux titres où la lumière ne perlera pas, là où seuls échos et métronome sec vous tiendront compagnie (Dulcet et High Strung), la béatitude va reprendre du galon avec Lucid Dream, laissant une belle mélodie, voix spectrales et rythme Uk Garage s’elever dans un lit gazeux emplissant la totalité de l’espace disponible dans le cerveau. Pas de réelle évolution, on plane juste, on se laisse dériver, sous un soleil d’hiver. Celui que l’on affronte en haut des pistes, celui qui se répercute en millier de prismes sur la neige. C’est aussi le moment où l’album s’envole complètement, direction sublime, sans ne jamais, ou presque, avoir envie de nous refoutre la tête dans un trou sombre et poisseux.
Birth Interlude, (qui n’a rien d’une entracte, du haut de ses 4 minutes), serait presque mon morceau préféré de la galette. Pourtant, rien ne se passe, ou presque. Lineaire, diffus, débarque et se dérobe sans prévenir, comme une caresse. Des synthés, beaux à crever. Du vent. Du gaz sonore. Une mélodie qui m’arrache la colonne vertébrale. Et surtout, cette profondeur de son absolument incroyable, qui file le vertige. Tu écoutes ça dans le métro, t’as l’impression d’être à bord d’un nuage, rongé par la drogue, à dériver de stations en stations, la tête coupée par une lame de sérénité. Je ne sais pas, c’est juste la pureté aveugle, celle que l’on ressent par tous les pores, tout en cultivant un grain sonore que l’on pourrait presque toucher, malaxer. On a l’impression que le tout nous enveloppe, nous soulève, nous cajole. Et quand, tout a coup, un rythme déboule, on se dit que le morceau va partir en couille, va exploser, se déchirer. Que dalle, il va s’éteindre discrètement, nous laissant dans un état de mi-frustration mi-quiétude absolue.
Il est alors temps d’elever le rythme, de repartir pour une cavalcade. De celles qui vous font ouvrir les bras en courant sur l’herbe verte, avec le vent fouettant le visage. Ouai, des mecs comme Burial nous balancent dans une mégalope crade et hypnotique, pleines de lumières et de camés. D’autres, comme Scuba, ou Pinch, nous plongent dans une caverne de glace. Certains s’essayent à la techno de cathédrale. Mais Clubroot préfère les champs enneigés à perte de vue, les falaises vertigineuses fouettées par le vent, l’immensité et la solitude steppes d’hiver. La grandeur absolue des paysages, où seuls quelques aliénés trouvent refuge pour faire la fête, danser jusqu’à perdre pied, puis mourir d’une overdose contrôlée. Talisman, qui se paie la meilleure intro du disque (voix superbes, handclap puis grondements formant un tout tellement classe que tu fais écouter ça à un entretien d’embauche, t’es pris direct comme Pdg), laisse échapper quelques réminiscences Trance, avec un rythme plus marqué, imparable, et un apparat un peu plus pute, avec ces zébrures de voix et de synthés à la mélodie parfaite. Mais attention, ici, les voix ne font pas “Ouh yeah” “baby shag me” “I need you” ou “set me freeeeee” façon Burial, Pangaea ou FaltyDL. Non, chez Clubroot, ça hulule, ça berce, ça souffle, ça emporte. Pas de mots, juste des notes, des lignes, des vocalises. Des chants perdus dans les brumes, des susurrements désespérées. Ca émane des nuages, des arbres, du vide. Ca tue, c’est vraiment beau, ça t’ouvre deux grosses plaies sanguinolentes dans le dos pour y planter des ailes de chérubins. Je tuerai pour entendre ça sur un soudsystem de folie, passé dans un stade ou un cinéma. Histoire de voir mille personnes s’envoler en même temps. Genre secte à la con qui veut tutoyer les cieux en se tenant la main. Ouai, Clubroot, musique pour flingués, et autres cercles de camées voulant couper leurs psychotropes avec une dose de défonce sonore.
Alors ok, on pourra s’emmerder un peu sur l’ultra aride (mais court) Nexus, mais il suffit de le prendre comme piste de lancement du sublime Sempiternal, et plus de problème. Parce que Sempiternal, c’est l’autre bombe du disque, un espèce de morceau Trance religieuse traversée par des choeurs à pétrifier sur place tellement c’est parfaitement placé. Le rythme y est vachement soutenu, presque Techno, tabasse au milieu de cet océan cosmos. Et quand un break calme le tout, laissant un pied ultra sourd filer des coups de latte, on retient sa respiration, on savoure, car l’ultime envolée est absolument mortelle, avec ce grondement de la mort, et ces deux minutes oscillants entre clarté absolue, violons synthétiques et hachures électro. Séraphins en mini-jupes, Gloss sur ton nuage, Stroboscope dans la toundra.
L’album s’éteindra sur un supère Dub en Crystal, Serendipity Dub, hypnotique, en suspension, labyrinthe de reflets limpides qui m’arrachent les tympans quand la mélodie, superbe, débarque un peu après 2 minutes. Cette litanie, lâchée au milieu du morceau, frôle l’idéal dans le genre Je-suis-perdu-dans-les-lymbes-de-mon-subconscient, et ne manquera pas de faire des noeuds à nos chères ossatures dorsales.
Rien à dire, Clubroot m’impressionne. Par la beauté et la perfection de ses fresques sonores. Par cette envie de transporter une électro-dubstep-uk garage dans des recoins peu arpentés auparavant, même si restant en terrains connus. Si la filiation avec des mecs comme Burial ou 2562 est évidente, l’anglais arrive à creuser son propre terreau en travaillant sur la solitude des grands espaces, délaissant, sur la moitié des titres de l’album, la saleté des mégalopoles. Et c’est justement quand Clubroot tente de ramener du béton et des lampadaires dans sa musique que l’album calle un peu, si l’on excepte le très bon premier titre. Alors oui, la galette se prend un gros coup de mou dans la gueule à cause du 3 et 4 morceau, (et du 8eme, heureusement bien entouré) mais les morceaux entourant ces excavations caverneuses sont parfois tellement mirifiques que l’on en oublie totalement les deux-trois écueils suscités.
Mais le bonhomme m’impressionne aussi dans cette manière de tailler les sons, dans cette profondeur, cette dimension, cette ampleur qui file à ses morceaux. Contrairement à la 3d balbutiante des cinoches qui vous font raquer 13 euros, Clubroot semble avoir trouvé, seul devant ses machines, la technique de l’espace et de l’étendue sonore intégrale, ne nécessitant que deux bonnes oreilles et un casque molletonné. Les nappes, les synthés sont affolantes, les rythmes se propagent telles des ondes sur un lac limpide, les réverbs profitent de la moindre excavation de votre tunnel auditif pour ricocher dur. Même un mec qui gerbe sur la musique de Clubroot utilisera sans honte le cd pour tester ses nouvelles enceintes.
Il y a enfin cette propension à façonner, à l’instar d’un Eno, un genre de claviers qui me fascinent : ces nappes, ces sons impossible à décrypter, à définir, semblant autant être des choeurs éthérés que des synthés sortis d’un logiciel. A la lisière de la chorale robotisé, ou des lignes techno-trance organiques. Voix passées à la moulinette plug-in, ou synthés touchés par la grâce, difficile de trancher.
Ce qui est facile par contre, c’est de conclure. Clubroot sert un superbe album pour les amateurs du genre, et certains morceaux font parti de ce que j’ai entendu de plus beau cette année. Simulateur de chute libre, Sky diving dans tes tympans, t’as pas l’air con à vouloir voler dans l’infini en écartant les bras et en bavant de béatitude, alors qu’il est 19 heures, et que tu reviens du boulot dans un métro qui pue la pisse.
Pour ceux qui ont toujours rêvé de se camer avec les anges, le cul posé sur un nuage. Ou d’écouter un beau disque, plus simplement.
